Participation in GeoforGood2020 (October, 2020)
It was great to attend #GeoforGood2020 virtual #summit from 20th-21st October, 2020. It was an amazing event where I learnt about #EarthBlox (it harness GEE power without coding), #GooglePlusCodes (Google assigned a virtual geo address to every locality on earth), #GoogleEnvironmentalInsightsExplorer (uses exclusive data sources and modeling capabilities in a freely available platform to help cities measure emission sources, run analyses, and identify strategies to reduce emissions), #LightneingTalks from experts of Geospatial domain, #GoogleEarthEngine training sessions, Google Earth Engine for Education (#GEEforEducation) and much more.
Assisted a bicyclist in developing a map for his journey, in 2017, around Pakistan 

I will follow this route.
I am really thankful to Mr. عدیل احمد from Forman Christian College Geography Department who made this map and helped me to get Final Approval from Guinness world records.

Organized GIS Day 2019

Department of Geography Celebrated GIS Day 2019. The event was among the Series of events under Geography Department’s Platinum Jubilee (1944-2019) Celebrations. Representatives from Urban Unit participated in the event and talked about the role of GIS in their respective organizations. Chairman department of Geography, Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi addressed the Ceremony and thanked participants for their Presentations. The Ceremony was concluded with a

cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the GIS Day 2019.

Organized Geography Department's Platinum Jubilee (1944-2019)

Department of Geography celebrated its Platinum Jubilee (1944-2019). PU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Akhtar was the Chief Guest on the day. The Faculty and many prominent Alumni Geographers attended the ceremony including Dr. Maryam K. Ilahi, the First Ph.D. Female of Pakistan.
Chairman Department of Geography, Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi enlightened on the past and current achievements of the department.
Vice Chancellor addressed the audience and assured full support for the Students and Faculty of the Department of
Geography.

Geography Field Trip (April 2019)

Final Year ​Students from Geography Department performed Demographic Field Survey in the villages in the surroundings of Islamabad, the Capital City of Pakistan from 18 April to 23 April 2019. This field trip was arranged for the final project of the students of Geography in which they learnt about the demographic transitions and profiling of people living in the villages and related trends through questionnaire survey. The students were accompanied in the supervision of Head of Department Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi, Assistant Professor of Geography, Dr. Isma Younes; Assistant Professor of Geography, Dr. Ibtisam Butt and Lecturer, Mr Adeel Ahmad.

Practical Session on Object-based Image Classification (February 2019)

​On 22 February 2019, Department of Geography, University of the Punjab organized a lecture on “Object-based Satellite Image Classification” by Mr. Amir Javed, Remote Sensing Analyst at Punjab Forest Department. The participants included students and faculty members from the Department. The lecture shed light on the basics of satellite image classification, mainly focusing object-based satellite image classification. Students excitedly participated and benefited a lot from this interesting seminar. Honorable Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Safdar Ali Shirazi presented certificate and shield to the guest speaker on this occasion.

Gala dé Carte - Celebrating GIS Day 2k17 (November 2017)

​On Thursday 22 November 2017, Geography Department and Dean Geographical Society (DGS) organized a mega event in the context of GIS Day  (Gala dé Carte) which is celebrated each year on the third Wednesday of November. The event was comprised of informative talks by professionals, certificate distribution followed by GIS cake cutting ceremony. Professionals from Survey of Pakistan (SoP), National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), WWF, MM Pakistan, Open Humanitarians, University of the Punjab and The Spatio participated/presented their work and gave informative talks on importance/ utility of GIS in real world applications. Among the presenters, Mr Badar-Ul-Hussnain (Senior GIS/ RS Specialist, NESPAK) presented the work of NESPAK; Mr Usman Latif (Founder of Open Humanitarians) talked about Open Data Mapping; Dr Atif Butt (GIS Consultant) presented idea on WebGIS Development and Application and Mr Gauhar Rehman (Project Manager MMP) presented a case study on GIS application for groundwater in Lahore.

International speaker from Vietnam, Dr Nguyen Quoc Long (Head of Surveying and Mining Department, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology), also participated via Skype and presented work on GIS applications in Geology and Mining.

The presentations were followed by GIS Cake cutting ceremony by Professor and Executive Dean of Social Sciences and Management, Dr Noel Khokhar and Chairperson, Department of Geography, Mr Kashif Shafique.

The event was summarized in Certificates and Shields Distribution Ceremony in which Dr Khokhar presented shields and certificates to the officials from various companies. The event was organized in the supervision of Geography faculty members including Lecturer, Mr Adeel Ahmad; Lecturer, Hafsah Batool and Assistant Professor, Dr Khadija Shakrullah.

Students learned about many diverse fields in which Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing can be applied. The event was full of awareness and a great opportunity to connect industries with educational institution.

Geo Awareness Week Celebration conducting FCCU Mapathon’17 (November 2017)

​On 16 November 2017, Department of Geography and Dean Geographical Society (DGS) celebrated geo awareness week 2017 (Nov 11 – 17) by arranging FCCU Mapathon’17. The event was hosted in collaboration with Open Humanitarians organization. Mr Usman Latif, Director Open Humanitarians, trained the students for the competition. The faculty of Geography participated as trainers in this competition. Geographical Information System (GIS) has been a core subject of Geography. The event proved to be very informative for the students because of hands-on practice on online maps. The prizes were distributed among winners in the competition by the Chairperson of Geography Department, Mr Kashif Shafique. The event was organized by DGS society under advisory of Mr. Adeel Ahmad. 

A Talk on Geopolitical Importance of CPEC (October 2017)

​Dean Geographical Society in collaboration with Department of Geography conducted a talk on Geopolitical Importance of CPEC by Ms Javaria Qais Joiya on 23 October 2017 in E-137. The talk shed light on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). She explained how CPEC is a collection of projects currently under construction at a cost of about $50 billion that is now seen as integral within the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative. It was an informative session that helped students in understanding the impact of this exchange geopolitically. Students excitedly participated and benefited a lot from this interesting seminar.

Seminar on Remote Sensing of Land (May 2017)

​On 11 May 2017, Geography Department and Dean Geographical Society (DGS) organized a lecture on “Remote Sensing of Land” by Mirza Muhammad Waqar who is currently a PhD scholar at Chiba University, Japan. The participants included students and faculty members from different departments of FCCU. The lecture shed light on the basics of remote sensing, its applications for land resource management and evaluation and modern trends in land remote sensing. Students excitedly participated and benefited a lot from this interesting seminar.

​The main major types of Earth resources such as energy, metallic, non-metallic, water, soil - and the impacts that resource usage has on the Earth environment are a currently crictical issue of worldwide interest. Geo-spatial technology and its rapid progression play a pivotal role in managing Earth resoures and monitoring the Earth environment. The 2017 international conference on Geo-spatial technologies and Earth resources (GTER 2017) which will be held at the Hanoi University of Mining and Geology (HUMG) is an excellent opportunity for academics, practitioners, consultants, scholars, researchers and policy makers to present their papers, exchange, and share their ideas, research results in the field of Earth resources and Geospatial technologies.

The Hanoi University of Mining and Geology was founded in 1966. After 50 years of relentless efforts, the university has emerged as a leading institution in Vietnam for higher education, training and scientific research in the fields of Earth science. Mine surveying has been teaching by the Mine Surveying department at the university since 1967. As a result, thousands of mine surveyors have been working in many areas of the country. In October 2017, surveyors from all over of Vietnam will gather in Hanoi to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam mine surveying education. The HUMG and the International Society for Mine Surveying (ISM) will co-organize the GTER 2017 to mark this special event.

Technology fusing Nature 2017 (TechNat'17)

​On Thursday 20th April, 2017; Geography Department and Dean Geographical Society (DGS) organized a mega event in the context of Technology fusing Nature (TechNat’17). The event was comprised of an Open House, DGPS Training Session, Seminar on Technology fusing Nature, “Are You Aware” Competition and Certificate Distribution Ceremony. Companies including Punjab Forest Department, Punjab Municipal Development Fund Company (PMDFC), Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Faisalabad, JERS Engineering Consultants, The Urban Unit Company and KBS Enterprises participated in the Open House and their projects related to Eco-Urban Planning, Environment Conservation, Forest Management, Engineering Works, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) for Nature. The Differential GPS (DGPS) training was conducted by Mr. Kamran Muhammad from KBS Enterprises who are official distributors of Trimble International in Pakistan. Dr. Tahir Ali Akbar (Senior GIS Specialist) from Urban Unit and Mr. Shahid Imran from Punjab Forest Department presented in seminar related to GIS and RS for Nature applications. Students participated in “Are You Aware” competition in which a huge World Map was displayed and students have to guess country locations. Students were presented with prizes on winning. The event was summarized in Certificates and Shields Distribution Ceremony in which Mr. Kashif Shafique (Geography Chairperson) presented shields and certificates to the officials from various companies including Mr. Athar Siraj from JERS, Ms. Urooj Saeed/ Ms. Iqra Khalid from The Urban Unit, Mr. Kamran Muhammad from KBS, Mr. Syed Aamir Mehmood from PMDFC, Ms. Bareera Anum/ Mr. Tassawur Hussain from WASA Faisalabad and Mr. Shahid Imran from Punjab Forest Department. Students learned about many diverse fields in which Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing can be applied. The event was full of awareness and a great opportunity to connect industries with educational institution.​

Study Trip to Olive Garden and Katas Raj Temple

​Students from Geography Department visited the only Olive Garden in Pakistan near Kalar Kahar and Katas Raj Temple on Saturday 01 April 2017. This study trip was arranged for the final project of the students of Geography in which they learnt about the sensitivity towards, and appreciation of, local cultures and biodiversity, sustainable benefits to local communities, and educational components for both the traveler and local communities. By visiting the Katas Raj Temples in Chakwal District, students were briefed by the local guides, about the trends and impact of tourists to the temple from Pakistan as well as from India. Students also adored seeing the prayer areas of other communities. The students were accompanied in the supervision of Assistant Professor of Geography, Ms Khadija Shakrullah; Lecturer, Ms Hafsah Batool and Lecturer, Mr Adeel Ahmad.

Department of Geography arranges a lecture on Digital Mapping from JICA Mapping Expert

​On Friday 10 March 2017, GIS Mapping Specialist, Mr Mohsin Ali, visited Geography Department of FCCU and delivered a lecture on Selecting Symbologies in Digital Mapping. Mr Mohsin is currently working as GIS Mapping Specialist at Japanese International Cooperative Agency (JICA) Faisalabad. Students enjoyed an interactive lecture and hands-on practice on ArcGIS 10.2.1 software. The lecture was full of practical and field based knowledge and was intensely fruitful for the Geography students regarding GIS/ Digital Mapping.
